It’s been three years since Stamford hosted its annual Mid Lent Fair, but everyone certainly appeared to be making up for lost time as large crowds massed in the streets yesterday evening for food, thrills and fun on its opening night.
The Stamford Annual Mid Lent Fair opened yesterday to large crowds after an absence of three years due to Covid-19. One of the largest in the country, the fair was formally opened by Stamford's Town Mayor, Cllr Gloria Johnson, who read aloud the traditional conduct and responsibilities for all attending the event as laid down by King William IV in the 18th Century. The opening was blessed with glorious sunny spring weather and the mood on the streets was jubilant as locals enjoyed this much missed Spring event once again.
Chairman of the Showmen’s Guild, William Percival, spoke to Rutland and Stamford Sound of how moved he was to see so much support as they moved into town:
“I got a lump in my throat yesterday” says William, “When we pulled onto Broad Street and set the fair up there were that many local people all saying how nice it was to see us back – it means everything.”
The Mid Lent Fair will be running in Broad Street, Red Lion Square and down to The Meadows until Saturday 02 April.
